Tip 2: Make sure you know what the region's malaria status is, be prepared for it and take every precaution necessary.
Malaria zones in South Africa include:

Intermediate Risk Zones are Kosi Bay, Sodwana Bay, Mkuze Game Reserve and St Lucia Lake (excluding St Lucia town and the river mouth), the use of anti-malarial drugs is advisable from October - May only for those permanently on steroids, people under 5 or over 65, pregnant, chronically ill, epileptics, porphyries, spleen-less, AIDS patients and chemotherapy patients.

Low Risk Zones include North West Province, Northern Cape, Augrabies Falls and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Prevention of mosquito bites are advised but drugs are unnecessary.

Malaria can still be contracted with precautionary measures. Symptoms are: flu-like and include fevers, headaches, joint pains, sweating, diarrhoea and nausea, shivers, and fatique. Warning: Malarai can show itself 6 months after visiting the area. Seeing a doctor soonest after start of symptoms, malaria can be diagnosed and treated.
