Northern Cape, South Africa

This large province spreads from the West Coast to the capital city of Kimberley which borders with the Free State and covers a third of South Africa’s landmass. It is rough diamond where hot, arid and harsh dessert land turns colourful every spring with masses of wild flowers. Rainfall is very low and heat can rise to unbearable degrees during summer.

Upington & Augrabies Waterfall and National Park

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park – this huge grass covered dune area is home to the black-maned Kalahari lion and the large gemsbok.

Richtersveld National Park – is a large desert area and park housing interesting plants and quiet serenity.

Goegap Nature Reserve – 15kms SE of Springbok with 45 different mammals, just under 100 different bird species, great flower viewing of which the Hester Malan Wild Flower Garden.

Skilpad Wild Flower Reserve – near Kamieskroon in Namaqualand and only open during spring.

Tswalu Private Desert Reserve – in the Kuruman area at the foot of the Korannaberg Mountains. This is South Africa’s biggest private wildlife sanctuary with sensitivity to ecology and luxury accommodation.

Witsand Nature Reserve – near Postmasburg is home to rare plants, birds, mammals and insects.
