This magical destination in the warm Indian Ocean SW of India needs no introduction as it’s famous for its over 1000 coral islands of which 80 have resorts. Kaafu (North and South Male Atoll) is where you will find capital Male, the airport and many resorts, while Seenu (Addu) is the 2nd largest and southernmost atoll, hosting the Gan International Airport.
Favoured Activities in the Maldives will have something to do with the amazing ocean and include scuba diving, snorkelling and other water sports. The best diving is found farther from Male, but this is also more expensive as transport can become costly.
Maldivian Culture consist of almost exlusively Sunni Muslim, with a fusion of Arab, South Indian and Sinhalese influence.
Maldivian Climate is consistantly sunny and tropical with lower rainfall from October to April.
Maldivian cuisine consist typically of grilled fish and rice, mas riha fish curry and masroshi pastries, papadhu, fish-based snacks and other spicy meals.
Maldivian Health is good and malaria-free, but drinking bottled water only is advised. Be sun-wise!
Maldivian Transport
By plane, most visitors arrive at Malé International Airport on Hulhulé Island next to Male. (Departure taxes are included in your ticket.)
Air taxis and boats operate during daytime - check with your resort or travel agent. All landing strips are under an hour from Male.
Boat taxis are popular forms of transport and range in shape and size, service and quality.
Maldivian Visa consist of a free 30-day visa on arrival (proving your valid travel documents, a return ticket and sufficient funds. The period can be extended at Male.
10 Complexes (atol groups) of coral islands are open to tourism and include:
Lhaviyani (Miladhunmadulu Uthuruburi)
Raa (Maalhosmadulu Uthuruburi)
Baa (Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi)
Kaafu (North and South Male Atoll)
Alifu (Ari) — to the west of Kaafu
Vaavu (Felidhu)
Meemu (Mulak)
Faafu (Nilandhe Atholhu Uthuruburi)
Dhaalu (Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi)
Seenu (Addu) — the southernmost atoll
The other atolls are Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Gnaviyani, Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Laamu, Nyavinani, Seenu, Shaviyani, and Thaa.
