Johannesburg – it is in this large cosmopolitan city that gold was discovered in 1886 and history was made colourful by fortune seekrs. When looking past the many highways and cityscape the visitor will find Jozi (as it’s lovingly referred to by loyal locals) a beautiful tree-filled space, stunning Botanical Gardens, dams and lakes, plenty indoor activities like Gold Reef City, theatres,Johannesburg museums, a planetarium and a large collection of eateries, deli’s, coffee shops and night clubs. In Roodepoort is the lovely Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden which is stunningly situated against the backdrop of the Witpoortjie Waterfall and covers close to 300 hectares.

Sandton – you will mostly find the rich and beautiful home-owners here and thus it’s a lovely space with impressive architecture and landscaping, incredible shopping centres and trendy eateries, bars and nightclubs. Much enjoyed by locals is Theatre on the Square.

Soweto Soweto – this enormous city needs no introduction and once housed two Nobel Peace Prize Winners in Vilikazi Street. It is a place worth exploring for its history and atmosphere. An extremely dangerous township in certain parts, a city-of-hope in others like its focal point of the 1970s and 1980s resistance struggle in Regina Mundi Catholic Church and then places like dube’s Wandie’s Place – high-profile shebeen (bar). Make sure to visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial and the Ubuntu Kraal in Soweto Centre, for an authentic traditional experience .

Tshwane (Pretoria) – a close neighbour to Johannesburg, the Jacaranda city – so called due to the abundance of these trees throughout – is a stunning city with upkept gardens and safe(r) public spaces. Make sure to visit the Hartbeespoort Dam for a couple of days where you can do watersports and soak up the sun. Another must-see is the Zoological gardens and those of the Union buildings, Voortrekker Monument, Melrose House and Kruger House, Smuts House and Sammy marks Museum. Just outside of Tshwane is dinokeng, known for its wildlife and birding plus Tshwane’s Natural Botanic Gardens, 8kms from city centre.
