Taking your kids to a game reserve in South Africa

Introducing your children to nature, the African bush and its occupants, the serene silence and wild wonder - well, that is a privilege one should do if possible. Game and Nature reserves make wonderful holiday destinations as long as the parents remember a few key points:

South Africa is full of bugs and they bite! Enquire about malaria and how to take precautions against it, remember also to pack ointment for other insect bits and ask about dress code in the bush.

Investigate the area's health situation and discuss with your doctor what precautions you need to take before travelling. Do any of you need vaccinations for your paperwork? Monitor your children carefully throughout the holiday and up to 6 months thereafter - if at any moment your child seems sick, take him/her to the doctor immediately and make sure to mention the destination.

The South African sun is harsh and relentless so make sure your backpack contains sunblock and water. Dehydration springs upon you before you realize you are thirsty and kids often go without water, without the parents realizing it. Getting sunstroke on holiday is not fun and one should always wear a hat and sunblock. Your clothing should be made of light cotton fabrics with long sleeves.

Pay attention to areas often overlooked, such as ankles and the back of necks. Wear hats with back-flaps and tuck pants into socks during bushwalks. And of course, make double certain all areas are protected with sunblock.

If your outings include game drives and walks, inform your children beforehand on which animals live in that area and that loud noise scare them away. Ask your guide to give you a quick age-appropriate brief on safety tips. Another great idea is packing a book to study the specific, anticipated animals the night before. Upon return one can tick those seen and discuss them over dinner.

Mental preparation beforehand and gentle reminding is the way to introduce kids to the bush. Lead by example and learn together - have fun!
