How to best deal with street people in South Africa

If you would like to help a child or adult who lives on the street, buy them a food and direct them to a shelter.

Do not give money to street children or adults. Often huge amounts of cash is spent on addiction which worsen the situation.

Shelters can also be called and you can ask for the child’s name and details before calling 021-4617470. These shelters often know the children and can guide you further best.

Don’t listen to their stories but have a pre-meditated plan of action for situation like these. If you then come into contact with a child/adult that needs your help, you can act without hesitation.

Treat street (people and) children well. Every rude or ignoring action reinforces their worthlessness and keeps them on the streets. These little people are kids, like all children.

A great idea is to buy a stack of supermarket vouchers and keep them in your wallet. This way you give money – but not in cash.
